How to Build Your AI Leadership Skills: A Practical Guide to Personal TERA
In the age of GenAI, effective leadership isn't about having all the answers; it's about having a disciplined process for continuous learning and adaptation. While the TERA-LENS model provides a framework for guiding enterprise-wide AI transformation, its core engine—the TERA cycle—is just as powerful when applied to your own development. This is the personal TERA cycle, a structured method for your individual reinvention as a GenAI-savvy leader
.
Personal TERA is not about becoming a technical expert
Instead, it’s a systematic process for building your AI-related leadership skills step-by-step, turning curiosity into capability through hands-on experimentation. It helps you internalize the mindset, skillset, and toolset needed to lead confidently in an AI-augmented world. By running these personal learning loops, you not only develop your own abilities but also model the adaptive behavior essential for guiding your teams.
Personal TERA Phases
As with a niormal TERA cycle, the personal TERA cycle consists of four distinct phases: Trial, Explore, Reflect, and Apply. Let’s break down how to use this process to start building your own GenAI leadership capabilities.
1. Trial - Engage with Focused Curiosity
Your journey begins with a small, intentional experiment designed to test a hypothesis about your own behavior or skills
. This isn't just a test of technology; it's a "behavioral learning vehicle" to see how you personally interact with AI. The goal is to design a low-risk but high-learning "safe, strategic probe" into your own habits.
To frame your trial, use the CLEAR-AI model as a guide. Select one of the five CLEAR capabilities—Co-Thinking Mindset, Limits of AI, Exposure to AI, Attention to Culture, or Reclaiming Time—as your focus.
You can use the online TERA-LENS canvas to structure your work - don't worry, when using the canvas, nothing leaves your computer.
Example Trial:
• Focus: Reclaiming Time for Strategic Priorities.
• Hypothesis: "If I use GenAI to summarize my morning emails and meeting notes, I can reclaim 30 minutes each day for strategic reflection or mentoring my team" .
• Action: For two weeks, you commit to this practice. You track the time saved and, crucially, observe whether you successfully reinvest it in higher-value leadership activities .
2. Explore - Observe Yourself in Action
After the trial period, the Explore phase involves pausing to systematically and objectively observe what happened. This isn't about interpretation yet; it's about collecting the facts of your experience. What did you notice about your own cognitive and emotional reactions?
• Did you find yourself blindly trusting the AI's summaries (Automation Bias)?
• Did you feel a need to verify its output?
• Did the reclaimed time feel liberating, or did it just create pressure to fill it with more operational tasks?
The goal is to surface your authentic behaviors and reactions without judgment, creating a clear picture of your interaction with the AI tool.
3. Reflect - Turn Experience into Insight
Reflection is where you move from observation to interpretation, asking, “What does this mean for me as a leader?”. You analyze the data from the Explore phase to understand your habits, biases, and blind spots when using AI.
• What did you learn about your own tendency toward over-reliance versus healthy skepticism?
• Did the trial reveal a new, more effective way of thinking or working?
• How does this experience align with your personal leadership values?
This stage is about internalizing the lessons and building the critical judgment needed to lead responsibly in the AI era.
4. Apply - Shape Yourself Through Action
The final phase is about turning your newfound insight into an embedded practice. Based on your reflection, you might decide to make your trial a permanent habit, adjust your workflow, or even start coaching your team on what you learned.
The Apply phase is also the bridge to your next personal TERA cycle. The knowledge you've gained becomes the foundation for a new hypothesis and a new trial, ensuring your development is a continuous loop of learning and growth. By consistently running these personal TERA cycles, you build momentum, deepen your AI fluency, and steadily transform yourself into the leader the future demands.
